Trust In The Lord With All Your Heart

My husband travels frequently for work, and once his rental car leaves our driveway, I slip into survival mode—caring for our toddler, pets, and home on my own. Each day has meals, chores, and a to-do list so things run smoothly while he’s gone. Every time he’s away, I marvel at how so many single parents live in a constant state of being the only ones carrying everything. The strength they have amazes me.
The last time he was gone, I was so eager for Thursday night to come when his flight would land around midnight. As I got into bed, knowing that when I woke up he would be home, I felt a big sigh of relief wash over me. It would be my last night sleeping with the bathroom light on (because some childhood fears die hard). Just the thought of not having to do everything on my own for a few weeks brought peace.
But in that same moment, a very familiar, still, small voice convicted me: “Why aren’t you at peace, knowing I’m always with you and never ask you to carry anything alone?”
Ouch. It was the truth—and sometimes it gets buried in all of my to-do lists and the illusion of keeping my life in order. I struggle with relying on my own strength and forgetting that the Lord is the one who keeps the ship afloat while I’m solo-parenting.
What area of your life have you been trying to handle all on your own, without asking Him for help?
Maybe it’s in the area of your finances, believing that you’ll never be able to work enough to have what you think you need. It could be addiction—where you need God’s help and the encouragement of godly community. Or perhaps, because life feels smooth at the moment, you haven’t thought to ask the Lord to steer you forward daily. Whatever your situation is, God has a lot to say about how He wants to be an active participant in your life, because He is always near.
This isn’t a new struggle. In the Old Testament, the nation of Israel often faced opposition and massive armies that seemed impossible to overcome. Yet, God repeatedly reminded them of His covenant promise to be with His people. The same goes for you and me!
Consider the following verses:
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. - Deuteronomy 31:6
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. - Joshua 1:9
And a personal favorite of mine that hangs my kitchen:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. - Proverbs 3:5-6
I don’t have to walk through life like everything depends on me. I can choose to trust in the Lord and know that He is always with me. And yes, I’ll keep praying for the courage to trust Him more fully—even in small things, like turning off the bathroom light.
FURTHER THOUGHT:
Think about a burden you’ve been carrying. Growth really happens in community, so I challenge you to confess your burden to someone you can trust. It could be someone in your small group, someone at your church, a trusted Believer, or a leader in your life.
After you share, ask them to pray for you and check in with you on how it’s going. As they do, you will find yourself continuing to grow in the strength that comes from relying on the Lord and others. You don’t have to carry it all alone—He is with you, and He has already placed people around you to help shoulder the load.
PRAYER:
Lord, I thank you so much for your gentle reminders that You are always with me. Help me not attach myself to temporal means of security or comfort but to truly rely on You! Thank You for Your promise to always be with me. I need that truth more than what I even realize. Help me pause and rely on You more instead of relying on myself. I will always end up burnt out and exhausted, but with You I am refreshed and relaxed. I love You and Your presence so much. Amen.
