How Great Thou Art

Have you ever found yourself speechless as you look out airplane windows at snow-draped peaks or beautiful bodies of water? My husband and I recently spent a weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah, for our wedding anniversary, and the entire trip we were blown away at how beautiful the views were. As we toured the Bonneville Salt Flats which looked like the moon's surface, and the Great Salt Lake's blue expanse, I couldn’t help but stand stunned in awe of the God who created all this beauty.

Fun fact: The Great Salt Lake is in the top 10 saltiest bodies of water in the world, at almost 30% salt in some areas (versus the ocean's 3.5 percent) and where only brine shrimp thrive - and they, in turn, feed millions of migrating birds each year.

You didn’t think you’d be getting a science lesson today, did you? Here's why I share this: marveling at creation should point our hearts upward to the Creator.
I love Job 12:7-10 - “But ask the animals, and they will instruct you; ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you. Or speak to the earth, and it will instruct you; let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? The life of every living thing is in his hand, as well as the breath of all humanity.”
Let's take a breath here. How does this passage reshape how you think and view the world around you?
The majesty of God and His creation is sprinkled all throughout Scripture. Here’s just a few-
Isaiah 45:12 - "It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts."
Romans 1:20 - "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."
Psalm 8:1 - "Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens."
Psalm 33:6 – 9: “The heavens were made by the word of the LORD, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the water of the sea into a heap; he puts the depths into storehouses. Let the whole earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it came into being; he commanded, and it came into existence.
Over any mountain, beautiful flower, unique and exotic animal, or body of water, there is one thing that God created that stands set apart from them all. That’s you. Scripture has a lot to say about God’s majesty, His intention with every thing He made, but you are different. You are made in His image (Genesis 1), if you are a believer, you are His beloved child (1 John 3:1-2), you are chosen (1 Peter 2:9), you are a holy temple (1 Corinthians 3:16:17), you are valuable (Matthew 6:26), and you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
I want you to sit and let go of all of your momentary troubles for just a minute and imagine yourself being held by the God of the universe who created every star with his breath, every thing in sight with his Word, and He still sees you and calls you by name (Isaiah 43:1). When you realize how big He is, it can make us realize how small – not insignificant – but how fragile and precious we are. When we understand how great He is, we can give Him His heart’s desire – our hearts and our trust.
Let me end with this to hopefully convince you to see God’s glory and majesty and have you stand in awe and worship Him in a new way. In Louie Giglio’s ‘How Great is Our God’ talk, he shares how he met a molecular biologist and discussed how God’s glory is linked to the human body, specifically through a protein called laminin. Giglio shared an image of this protein 'glue' that binds our cells and even resembles a cross-shaped web. It's a beautiful picture of Colossians 1:17: "In him all things hold together". When I Googled the image myself, I couldn’t help but have tears well in my eyes. I'm so thankful that God cares about every detail!

I’m praying that as you meditate on how big our God is and how intentional He is in your life, your worship will outweigh your worries, and your adoration will be fixed most on Him. There is no one like the Lord!
FURTHER THOUGHT: This week, pause in wonder at even the simplest parts of creation - because through them, God's glory lifts our hearts to worship.
“Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.” - Saint Augustine
PRAYER: Lord, I thank you so much for how your glory is reflected in everything you made. Open my eyes so I can see you more clearly as I soak in how great yet how intentional You are. When I am tempted to worship the creation, help me fix my eyes on You. Remind me that You are great and grand and there is nothing that is too big or hard for You to accomplish. Help me lean into You with my worries and change my perspective to be focused on Your goodness. I praise You for Your wonderful works. Amen!
How Great Thou Art – Verses 1 – 2
O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow'r thro'out the universe displayed,
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When thro'the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze
How great Thou art!
