True Impact: The Power of Obedience to God

Have you ever come across a Bible passage you’ve read countless times, only to have it suddenly come alive in a way that feels brand new? It’s like the words leap off the page, revealing a depth and richness you hadn’t seen before. That happened to me recently, and what God revealed left me in awe—it was a moment that truly took my breath away.

As I reflected on the lives of Elijah and Elisha, I was struck anew by the power of their miracles and the magnitude of their revelations. These were men who walked closely with God, performing acts that defy explanation outside of His power. Elijah was one of only two people who never tasted death (Enoch being the other), and Jesus Himself was sometimes thought to be Elijah returned. But here’s what stood out to me most: neither Elijah, Elisha, nor even Jesus chased after making an impact.

They didn’t focus on achieving greatness or making a name for themselves. Instead, they lived lives of obedience. Time and again, they simply listened to God and followed through. As Jesus Himself said, “The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does” (John 5:19). His strength, power, and impact didn’t stem from striving—they came from perfectly aligning His actions with God’s will.

The same was true for other towering figures of faith—Moses, Esther, and Daniel, to name a few. Many of them didn’t seek out the roles they played. In fact, some resisted them outright. Yet their obedience allowed God to work through them, creating ripples far beyond what they could have imagined.

This realization hit me hard. Too often in my own life, I’ve focused on wanting to make an impact, to do something meaningful for Jesus. My intentions were good, but looking back, I can see how many of my plans were more about what I wanted than what God was asking of me. I would make decisions, wrap them in prayer, and assume they aligned with His will because they were good things.

But over time, God gently reshaped my heart. He reminded me that what He values most is relationship, not achievement. It’s not about what I do for Him—it’s about how closely I walk with Him. Even now, old habits sometimes creep in. I catch myself wanting to run ahead, to do instead of pause and listen. Yet God keeps pulling me back, teaching me that true impact doesn’t come from my striving—it comes from surrender.

The difference, I’ve learned, isn’t me. It’s Him. My job is simply to stay close, to listen, and to trust that His plans will always accomplish far more than anything I could ever dream up on my own.

FOR FURTHER THOUGHT

As you go through your week, take some time to pause and reflect on your own journey. Where are you striving to make an impact or pursue a goal without first seeking God’s direction? Consider starting each day with a simple prayer: Lord, show me what You are doing today and how I can join You in it. Help me to listen, trust, and obey.

Then, as you move through your day, look for moments to practice stillness—whether it’s in your morning quiet time, during your commute, or even in the middle of a busy moment. Ask God to reveal His heart to you and guide your steps. Write down anything you sense Him placing on your heart, even if it feels small or unrelated to your plans.

By the end of the week, take a few minutes to look back and reflect. How did walking closely with God change your focus? Did you notice moments where obedience to Him brought peace, clarity, or even unexpected opportunities to make a difference?

Remember, it’s not about what you achieve; it’s about how closely you walk with the One who does the transforming work. Trust Him to make the impact in ways only He can.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for reminding me that what matters most is not what I achieve but how closely I walk with you. Help me to quiet my heart and listen for your voice this week. Teach me to trust your plans over my own and to follow where you lead, even when it’s uncomfortable or unclear.

Give me the courage to obey and the patience to wait on your timing. When I’m tempted to run ahead or rely on my own strength, remind me that true power and impact come from you alone.

Use my life to reflect your love and grace in ways that only you can accomplish. Thank you for choosing to work through me, not because of who I am, but because of who YOU are.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
