What's in a Name?

Names carry meaning, shaping our identity and how we perceive ourselves. They tell stories, evoke memories, and hold the power to inspire or limit us. Have you ever paused to consider what your name represents? Or, even more profoundly, what God’s name reveals about who He is and what He desires for you?

God’s name is more than just a title. It embodies His character and His unchanging faithfulness. When I think of God’s name, words like CreatorProtectorProvider, Faithful FatherLoving FriendHealer, and Hope of all Nations come to mind. These names aren’t just poetic descriptions—they are promises rooted in Scripture.

Proverbs 18:10 (NIV) reminds us, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Similarly, Psalm 46:1 (NIV) declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Just as God’s name reveals His character, the narratives we embrace about our own names shape how we see ourselves. But what happens when those narratives are based on lies—whether spoken by others or whispered by our own insecurities?

The Stories We Believe

The thoughts we dwell on shape our identity. Too often, I’ve allowed untrue narratives to take root in my mind—stories of inadequacy, fear, or failure. These lies can become barriers, keeping us from stepping into the purpose and blessings God has for us.

Brain research shows that our minds are wired for patterns. The repeated messages we take in, whether from the world around us or our inner dialogue, create mental pathways. Over time, these patterns become the stories we tell ourselves—and sometimes, those stories are far from the truth.

How can we recognize and rewrite these false narratives? Start by asking:

  • Is this thought driven by fear, insecurity, pride, or bitterness?

  • Does it lead to cynicism, self-serving attitudes, or self-destructive behavior?

If the answer is “yes,” the narrative likely needs realignment with God’s truth.

Replacing Lies with Truth

For every lie, there’s a truth waiting to take its place. By turning to Scripture, we uncover how God sees us—loved, chosen, and created with purpose. Take time to list the lies you’ve believed and ask God to reveal the truths found in His Word. Here are some examples to declare over your life:

  • “I am enough because I am a child of God.” (John 1:12-13)

  • “I am greatly loved.” (1 John 3:1)

  • "Nothing can separate me from God’s love.” (Romans 8:38-39)

  • “We are God’s masterpiece…we can do the good things He has planned for us.” (Ephesians 2:10)

  • “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is he/she who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalm 34:8)

Let these truths shape your thoughts. Speak them over your life daily. Trust that God’s Word is unchanging, even when emotions and circumstances suggest otherwise.

Discovering the Power in a Name

Allowing God’s truth to define your identity isn’t just a mental shift; it’s transformative. As you release the lies and embrace God’s thoughts about you, you’ll find renewed confidence and clarity. God’s Word becomes a fortified tower—a place of safety and strength.

Take a moment today to thank God for who He is and for the truth He speaks over you. Trust Him to continue working in your life, reshaping you into the person He has called you to be.

By anchoring our identity in God’s unchanging truth, we gain the freedom to live boldly and fully. What is in your name? More than you might think. Let God show you.

Prayer

Creator God, thank you for reminding me that your word is true and that through your grace and mercy I am called your child. I am thankful that I can trust what you say about me, and that I am not what I feel or see, but rather I am who you say I am. Help me pay attention to the nudging of your Holy Spirit that directs my attention away from lies that are self destructive, and toward your truth that sets me free. Focus my attention on who you call me to be and the purpose you have called me to. Remove lies and unproductive thought patterns and replace them with your ways and your thoughts so that I may best reflect your love to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
