Finding Safety in God's Presence

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." — Psalm 46:1
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." — Isaiah 41:10
Have you ever noticed how exhausting it is to always be on guard?
Some of us carry an invisible burden—the constant belief that we are not safe. We brace ourselves for disappointment, expect the worst, and feel responsible for holding everything together. We become experts at planning ahead, controlling outcomes, staying busy, and preparing for every possible crisis. On the outside, we may appear capable and strong. Inside, we're simply tired.
The fear that "I am not safe" doesn't always come from present circumstances. Sometimes it grows from past wounds, broken trust, unexpected losses, or seasons when life felt completely out of control. Even when circumstances change, our hearts may continue living as though danger is just around the corner.
Yet Scripture offers a different story.
Psalm 46 doesn't say trouble won't come. In fact, it describes the mountains shaking, the earth giving way, and waters roaring. Even then, the psalmist declares that God is our refuge—our safe place when everything else feels uncertain. Our security is not found in predictable circumstances but in the unchanging character of God.
Isaiah 41:10 goes even further. God doesn't simply tell us not to fear; He tells us why we don't have to fear: "For I am with you." His presence is our confidence. His strength becomes ours when we have none left. His hand holds us steady when life feels like it's falling apart.
What if your peace didn't depend on everything around you being secure? What if it came from knowing the One who never leaves you—finding safety in God's presence even when life around you feels uncertain?
Today, consider where fear has convinced you to stay on high alert. Where are you carrying responsibilities God never asked you to bear? What would it look like to loosen your grip and trust that God is already holding you?
You don't have to carry the weight of keeping yourself and everyone else safe every moment of every day. The God who neither sleeps nor grows weary is watching over you. His presence is your refuge. His promises are your shelter. His love is your security.
PRAYER
Father, so often I live as though everything depends on me. I confess that fear has caused me to cling tightly to control instead of trusting You. Thank You for being my refuge and my strength when I feel weak and overwhelmed. Teach me to rest in Your presence instead of striving to create my own sense of safety. Remind me that You go before me, walk beside me, and hold me securely in Your hands. When anxiety rises, help me remember that Your presence is greater than my fear. Today I choose to trust that I am safe with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
