Be what?!

In a world running after fame, importance and significance, where being overly busy is considered a badge of honor and social media likes matter more than actual relationships, God whispers, “Be still.”

It’s so counter-intuitive. So different than the messages we are constantly bombarded with. So hard to do with a mind that is constantly racing in a million different directions.

Be still.

Jesus asks, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly" (Matthew 11:28-30, MSG).

Be still.

In the midst of election craziness, riots, lost jobs, fake news and relative truth, be still. Walk and work with Jesus. Let Him fashion your character. Let Him be your companion who shows you what is true and right, who blesses you with real purpose and significance. Who is bigger than the fear and pain.

When you feel weighed down, anxious, depressed and fearful, spend some time with Jesus. He’ll remind you how to live freely and lightly. He’ll help you pick up your spiritual weapons of praise and worship when they feel too heavy to lift. He’ll show you the many, many good things that are all around you if you’ll only slow down enough to notice.

Be still.

FOR FURTHER THOUGHT What in your life is feeling forced, out of step? How are your emotions or your ambitions leading you versus the Holy Spirit? Jesus says the way to recover is by making your relationship with Him your highest priority. Take a moment right now and think about what that means for your life. Make it a point to put into place the rhythms of grace that help you to keep company with Jesus.

PRAYER Abba Father, always You are good. Help me to remember this world is not my home, that heaven is my home. That no matter how crazy things get around me, You are still in control and on Your throne. That You promise to work all things together for my good. In my moments of faithlessness and doubt, let me reach for the weapons of praise and worship. Remind me of the sword of truth, Your holy word, that You have placed in my hand. Allow me to slay the lies that run through my head with Your words of healing and transformation. Would You allow me to surrender the need to understand my day-to-day outcome and remember that I do know my final outcome as Your child: eternity in Your loving hands. Amen.
