God is Writing Your Story

When your heart is breaking, it’s almost impossible to imagine that anything good could come next.
In the middle of loss, disappointment, or a painful ending—like a relationship you thought would last—it can feel cruel to hear that God has something better ahead. All you can see is the pain in front of you. The future feels blank, and hope feels distant.
But heartbreak has a way of narrowing our vision. Pain pulls our focus to the present moment and makes it hard to believe there could be another chapter—let alone a better one.
God’s people felt something similar as they waited for the Messiah. For generations, they lived under oppression, silence, and unmet expectations. They had promises from God, but no clear picture of how—or when—those promises would be fulfilled. Many wondered if God had forgotten them.
For centuries, God told a story before anyone could see the ending. He promised a Messiah long before Bethlehem, the cross, or the empty tomb. Through prophets, poems, and promises, God kept pointing to One who would come—often in ways people didn’t fully understand.
When Jesus finally arrived, He didn’t match every expectation. The Messiah came quietly, humbly, and through suffering. Yet every detail unfolded exactly as God intended. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was forgotten. Every promise was fulfilled at the right time.
“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman…”Galatians 4:4
That same God—the One who faithfully wrote the story of salvation—is writing your story, too.
We often want clarity right now. We want to know where life is going, why certain chapters feel painful, or why God seems silent. But just like the people waiting for the Messiah, we only see part of the story while God sees the whole narrative.
Trusting God doesn’t mean understanding every plot twist. It means believing the Author is good.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
If God can be trusted to keep His promise of a Savior—across generations, setbacks, and waiting—then He can be trusted with your future, your calling, and even your unanswered questions. Your life is not random. It is intentional, purposeful, and held in faithful hands.
For Further Thought
Mary and Joseph had to trust God’s story as they prepared for Jesus’ birth in a stable. They accepted the situation in front of them and trusted God regardless of how undesirable the setting. From such a strange set of circumstances God brought forth His Son exactly as He planned.
“And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:7
We can trust the story because God is the author. Jesus’ humble birth is a message to all of us of what God’s Kingdom is like and it is an invitation for us to surrender our plans, our ideas of how the story should go, and trust the faithful hand of God in our lives. We can trust God.
Consider the following questions:
Where do you struggle most to trust God with your story right now?
How does God’s faithfulness in sending Jesus strengthen your trust in Him today?
What would it look like to surrender the “pen” back to God in this season?
God is never absent. No matter how overwhelmed or distant you may feel today, don’t forget to make room for Jesus. He is writing a story far bigger than what you can see.
Prayer
Gracious God, I am so glad that you know what you’re doing even when I don’t see the whole picture. Thank You for being a faithful Author and for keeping Your promise to send a Savior, even when people doubted or didn’t understand. Help me trust You with my own story—the chapters I enjoy and the ones I don’t. When I can’t see the ending, remind me that You already can. Teach me to trust You, one page at a time. Amen.
